Beat it Like Pan: My Favorite Moments from Machel Monday

Machel Monday - The Journey of a Soca King

Carnival is a few days away and I don’t think I’ve ever missed it so much. Even though I’m not in Trinidad, I had the opportunity to watch Machel Monday through various sources on Facebook Live. It sure didn’t help my FOMO, but I loved it! There were tons of highlights throughout the show, but here are my favorite moments from Machel Monday – “Journey of a Soca King”.

The Calypso Rose Tribute

A few weeks ago the Calypso Queen of the World aka Calypso Rose won the Victoire de la Musique award for the World Music Album of the Year in Paris, France. It’s said to be the equivalent of a French Grammy. She’s been performing since the age of 15 and professionally since 1964.  For Calypso Rose to still be making music all these years shows that she loves it and is willing to perfect her talent even with the change of music. Showcasing her win to the crowd at Hasely Crawford Stadium was one thing but to perform an Extempo and bring out singing legends and peers Baron, David Rudder, Drupatee and Gypsy was another. It was a great surprise for the older generation and showed the youth to respect and honor the ones who created the path for you.

Vocal Demand to Respect the Women

A big problem throughout Trinidad and Tobago in the past few months has been the abuse of women. Between the jumping and wining, I appreciated the artists being vocal and using their platforms to say it isn’t right. Despite his song “Single” which has been said to be ‘bashing women’, Orlando Octave also voiced a freestyle pointing out men that treat good women poorly. Hopefully, people were able to listen and this type of behavior across the islands stop.

The Unity on the Stage

Bounty Killa & Beenie Man together. Iwer George and Chinese Laundry together. Bunji Garlin and Machel Montano ON STAGE TOGETHER. To know these formal rivals’ history, see them performing peacefully and joining hands on the same stage really made my heart glad.

It was truly a great night for Caribbean Music fans all over. I also enjoyed the performances from King Bubba FM, MX Prime featuring the Ultimate Rejects, Soca Monarch 2016 winner Voice, and Red Bull Thre3Style 2016 winner DJ Puffy. I’m really hoping I can make it to Trini Carnival next year and witness Machel Monday live in person.
