How to Embrace Your Awkward Moments

5 Awkward Moments from Photo Funday

My name is JoAnna and I am awkward…

I was super excited to learn that today is National Awkward Moments Day. I have no idea how or when it started, but I do the quirkiest things and actually have learned to embrace my awkwardness. For years I felt bad for being awkward. I didn’t know how to deal with it and it was worst when others pointed it out.

How do I know I’m awkward?

  • Being social can sometimes be draining
  • I can’t flirt to save my life
  • I’m super clumsy when I’m nervous (it’s MUCH worst when I like you)
  • Funny faces in pictures are common
  • I make up weird words
  • Hugging people sometimes is just…no
  • I overthink EVERYTHING
  • Some of my best friends are awkward too…they GET me!

How do I deal with being awkward?

  • Realize I’m not alone – everyone experiences awkwardness one way or another
  • Practice conversations in the mirror
  • Hang out with people that aren’t so awkward
  • Be adventurous and do more things out of my comfort zone.
  • Stop caring about what others think and just be me

I’m not always the best with words either. There are tons of situations where I have no clue what to do or say and feel weird about the response. I’ve learned that sometimes words aren’t needed; presence and actions mean much more. Being “socially known” doesn’t mean you don’t have awkward moments either.  NOBODY is perfect. My friend Renee says being this way works for me. I guess…

Do you consider yourself awkward? If so, how do you deal with it?

I totally can admit that I am SOOO awkward at times. I think the best way I deal with it is by realizing that this is me and one of the reasons my loved ones care for me.Back when I wasn’t as secure in myself, I tried to conform but nope…They’re gonna get all this weird awkward black girl magic today

“I can’t flirt to save my life” omg there are so many times where I wonder how I ended up with any boyfriends at all. I just kinda always stalked/ stared at somebody I liked hoping their spidey senses tingled and they’d come like me too.

I totally get what you’re saying. If someone is interested, I’m usually like, “ME?!”

Girl… I am right there with you! I AM SO AWKWARD and I love it! of course there are those weird moments, but I always find a giggle and snap save me from the embarrassment (than that of just being shy about it). Have you tried this?

Prior to accepting my weirdness I too was very nervous and sometimes a bit self-conscious. But like you said we are not alone and plus I feel like awkward people are the BEST most funny, quirky, loving and generous people you can meet….Holla if you hear me lol!

Had no idea this day was even a thing but heyyyy, I’m so on board!

I’m definitely awkward in social situations but I think it’s a result of my effort to overcome my introversion. I try to just loosen up and be myself but it seems (from the facial reaction of others LOL) to come off weird. *shrug* But I try to do like you and just not care… which can be tough. 😕

I’m always laughing about awkward moments with my oldest daughter. Although I can act a little awkward, in general, I don’t think I am. I was really quite entertained by your photos, but your tips are helpful for everyone (the occasional awkward person and the serial awkwarder. LOL)

I also didn’t know such a day existed. Great post.
