In Celebration of New York Fashion Week, I attended the 2nd annual ESSENCE Street Style Block Party at the DUMBO Archway in Brooklyn. It was a day of music, art, fashion, and culture, mixed with black unity.

Activities at the Street Style Block Party

I made my way to the ESSENCE Street Style Block Party after church, meeting up with my cousin to take part in the festivities. Sponsor Chevrolet worked with new designers to create capsule collections with Trinidadian-American Designer and ESSENCE Street Style Alum, Ron Bass. The Home Depot shared closet organization tips and offered face painting in the Home Depot Kids Zone. Beauty Brand Shea Moisture provided free massages, product sample giveaways, manicures, makeup touch-ups, and hair styling in the Shea Moisture Beauty lounge. Despite long lines, my cousin was able to get a fresh halo braid to tame frizz caused by the rain.

In addition to the services provided, attendees were entertained by ESSENCE Fashion Editor Joiee Thorpe for a fashion show featuring looks for both kids and adults. There were also appearances by Gabrielle Union and Mel B throughout the day. Everyone was encouraged to visit the ESSENCE Street Style shops to purchase books, clothing, jewelry, food, and more from black-owned businesses.

Comfy Chic Style

I couldn’t end this post without sharing my look for the ESSENCE Style Block Party. I wore a Poppy Festival V-Neck romper by Aqua that I purchased from Bloomingdale’s back in May. Despite the “no white after Labor Day” rule, I didn’t care. While the romper would’ve looked great in the heels or sandals, I opted for a comfy chic style wearing my j’ourvet painted Chuck Taylor Converses. To accessorize, I wore my gold stacked bangles from The Pink Locket along with gold earrings gifted by my grandmother.

Walking to the ESSENCE Block Party in the rain made my 3-strand twist-out a “humid fro”, but I received a lot of compliments on my hair. My makeup was also SUPER simple; I only used these items:

Here’s a pic of me before the passing cloud hit (I wore MAC Heroine earlier in the day):

From bumping into fellow bloggers to dancing to the sounds of DJ Olivia Dope, we had a great time. The Street Style Block Party was a fun-filled event and I’m hoping ESSENCE continues to hold it in the years to come.

Have you attended the ESSENCE Street Style Block Party before?
