5 Caribbean Islands to Visit During Hurricane Season
When most people think about traveling to the Caribbean during hurricane season, they immediately cross the region off their travel list. As someone who has spent over 30 years visiting the Caribbean, I’m here to tell you that hurricane season doesn’t automatically mean you should look elsewhere. In fact, traveling during hurricane season can be an affordable way to experience the Caribbean region. The key is knowing where to go.
While no island is completely immune to bad weather, some islands outside the hurricane belt experience fewer direct hurricane impacts. These islands are often considered among the best Caribbean destinations to visit during hurricane season, thanks to their location and low risk.
When is Hurricane Season in the Caribbean?
The official Caribbean hurricane season months run from June 1 through November 30, with peak activity between August and October.
That doesn’t mean you’ll get storms every day, or even at all. I’ve traveled throughout the Caribbean during hurricane season and have experienced plenty of sunny beach days, boat rides, and outdoor adventures with occasional rain.
Weather patterns can change quickly in the tropics, but many islands have good weather year-round.
Why Travel to the Caribbean During Hurricane Season?
If you’re flexible and don’t mind watching the forecast, hurricane season can be one of the best times to visit the region. Benefits of visiting the Caribbean during hurricane season include:
- Lower airfare prices
- Hotel and resort discounts
- Fewer crowds at popular attractions
- Better availability at top properties
- More opportunities to experience destinations like a local
For travelers looking to maximize their budget without sacrificing the Caribbean travel experience, here’s where I’d recommend traveling if you’re planning a trip to the Caribbean during hurricane season.
Aruba
If you’re looking for one of the safest Caribbean islands to visit during hurricane season, spending a couple of days in Aruba should be at the top of your list.
Located just off the coast of Venezuela, Aruba sits outside the primary hurricane belt and rarely experiences direct hurricane impacts. That’s one reason it’s consistently ranked among the best Caribbean islands to visit during hurricane season.
Aruba is known for its beautiful beaches, clear waters, and year-round sunshine. Travelers often spend the day lounging on the sand, taking a catamaran cruise, or exploring the island’s desert landscapes.
Things to do in Aruba
- Eagle Beach
- Arikok National Park
- California Lighthouse
- Palm Beach
- Sunset sailing excursions
Curaçao
Curaçao is one of my favorite islands, with a little bit of everything: beaches, culture, history, great food, and adventure. As a popular Caribbean island outside the hurricane belt, Curaçao has a lower hurricane risk than many destinations farther north.
The capital, Willemstad, has colorful Dutch-Caribbean architecture, and the waterfront is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Outside of the city center, you’ll find great snorkeling and diving sites, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the southern Caribbean.
Things to do in Curacao
- Willemstad
- Queen Emma Bridge
- Playa Kenepa
- Shore diving and snorkeling
- Local Caribbean and Dutch-inspired cuisine
Bonaire
If your idea of a Caribbean getaway involves spending more time in the water than on land, Bonaire is for you. This laid-back island is a favorite among divers and snorkelers due to its protected reefs. Bonaire’s location also makes it one of the most reliable destinations during the Caribbean hurricane season months.
One of my favorite things about Bonaire is that it isn’t overcrowded. You won’t find tons of resorts lining every beach. Instead, you’ll visit a destination that prioritizes nature, sustainability, and outdoor adventure.
Things to do in Bonaire
- Bonaire National Marine Park
- Washington Slagbaai National Park
- Lac Bay
- Flamingo spotting
- Shore diving
Trinidad
As a Trinidadian American, I may be a little biased, but Trinidad is one of the most culturally rich destinations in the Caribbean. Unlike many islands that focus primarily on beach vacations, Trinidad has great food, diverse cultural experiences, and festivals throughout the year.
Trinidad is located just off the coast of Venezuela, placing it among the Caribbean islands outside the hurricane belt, and a great choice for travelers looking to visit during hurricane season.
Spend your days roaming the streets of Port of Spain, in the mountains of Paramin, relaxing at Maracas Beach, taking a boat tour through the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, or eating your way across the island.
Things to do in Trinidad
- Bathe at Maracas Beach
- Caroni Bird Sanctuary
- Visit Asa Wright Nature Centre
- Eat Doubles and bake and shark
- Enjoy Port of Spain’s food and nightlife scene
Tobago
If Trinidad is the life of the party, Tobago is where you go to slow down. Like Trinidad, Tobago benefits from its location. This small island is home to some of the Caribbean’s best coral reefs, and the Main Ridge Forest Reserve is the oldest legally protected forest reserve in the Western Hemisphere.
What I love most about Tobago is its authenticity. You can still find secluded beaches, fishing villages, and local restaurants where you’ll feel more like family than a tourist.
Places to Visit in Tobago
- Pigeon Point Heritage Park
- Buccoo Reef
- Main Ridge Forest Reserve
- Englishman’s Bay
- Tobago’s Heritage Festival in July
Don’t Skip Travel Insurance During Hurricane Season
Even when visiting Caribbean islands outside the hurricane belt, I never recommend skipping travel insurance. Weather-related delays, flight cancellations, missed connections, and unexpected travel disruptions can occur during hurricane season. Before booking your trip, consider purchasing a policy that includes:
- Trip cancellation coverage
- Trip interruption coverage
- Emergency medical expenses
- Emergency evacuation
- Travel delays
- Lost or delayed baggage
I personally recommend purchasing coverage as soon as you book your trip, as many policies limit hurricane-related benefits once a storm has been named.
Traveling during hurricane season doesn’t have to mean taking a huge risk. By choosing destinations with historically lower hurricane activity, you can enjoy all the things that make the Caribbean special while taking advantage of lower prices and fewer crowds.
If you’re searching for the best Caribbean islands to visit during hurricane season, Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire, Trinidad, and Tobago are great places to start. With the right planning, hurricane season might just become your favorite time to visit the Caribbean region.
