Do You Need a Rental Car in San Juan? What I Learned Driving the Kia Sportage
Puerto Rico had been on our radar for a while, and when we finally locked in a sisters’ weekend in San Juan, the planning started almost immediately. Getting a hotel was easy to find, but transportation took a little more thought. Since it was our first visit, we knew we didn’t want to just stay within walking distance of our hotel, which meant a rental car was needed.
What we didn’t expect was getting upgraded at the counter to a 2017 Kia Sportage, which honestly set the tone for the whole trip. If you’re trying to figure out whether renting a car in San Juan is worth it, I’m breaking down everything from picking up at the airport to navigating Old San Juan’s cobblestone streets so you can decide what makes sense for your trip.
Do You Really Need a Rental Car in San Juan?
The short answer: it depends on what kind of trip you’re planning. And I say that as someone who has done San Juan both ways.
When You Don’t Need a Rental Car (Visiting Old San Juan Only)
If your entire itinerary revolves around Old San Juan to roam the colorful streets, visit El Morro, Calle Fortaleza, and the restaurants within walking distance of your hotel, you can honestly skip the rental car. Old San Juan is very walkable, and rideshare apps like Uber work well in that corridor. Parking in the old city can be a headache you don’t need if you’re not planning to venture far.
Cruise passengers with a one-day stop also fall into this category. Save your money and your stress.
When You Should Consider a Rental
The moment your trip extends beyond Old San Juan, a rental car goes from “nice to have” to “should have booked it already.” Beaches like Luquillo, the Bacardi Distillery in Cataño, La Placita in Santurce, and El Yunque National Rainforest are all places that are either inconvenient or expensive to reach without your own wheels.
On our sisters’ weekend in Puerto Rico, we knew from the jump that we wanted flexibility and renting a car gave us exactly that.
Renting a Car at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU)
The Arrival Experience
Getting to the rental car area at SJU is straightforward. Once you clear baggage claim, follow the signs to the rental car center, it’s connected to the airport and easy to navigate even after a long flight. Lines can get long during peak travel seasons, so having your reservation confirmed ahead of time saves time at the counter.
Our Car Rental Upgrade Story
We originally booked a compact vehicle which honestly would have been fine. But at the counter, we were offered an upgrade to a 2017 Kia Sportage, and we said yes without hesitation. It was one of the best decisions of the trip. The Kia Sportage ended up being the perfect vehicle for us driving around San Juan.
Rental Agencies at SJU
Most of the major rental agencies are represented at the airport, including Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, Budget, and Alamo. I recommend comparing rates on a platform like Discover Cars before booking directly. Prices can vary significantly, and you’ll sometimes find better rates through a comparison tool than going straight to the agency’s website.
Pickup Ease
Pickup was simple. Once paperwork was signed, we were directed to our spot in the garage and drove off. No shuttle or waiting in a separate lot.

What It’s Like Driving in San Juan
Road Conditions
Here’s what surprised me: the roads in Puerto Rico are in better shape than I expected in some areas and rougher than I expected in others. The highways (like PR-26 and PR-22) are smooth and well-maintained. But once you get into Old San Juan? Cobblestone streets, steep hills, and narrow lanes become the norm very quickly.
This is exactly why I was glad we had the Kia Sportage. It’s equipped with the Dynamax™ all-wheel drive system, which continuously senses and adjusts traction based on road and weather conditions. Driving over cobblestones and navigating hilly streets felt controlled and comfortable in a way that a compact car might not have managed as well.
Signage
Road signs in Puerto Rico are in Spanish, which makes sense, but it can catch you off guard if you’re not expecting it. Exits are marked with “Salida,” distances are in kilometers, and some signage can feel sparse on smaller roads. It’s not impossible to navigate, but it does require a little more attention than driving stateside.
Traffic
Traffic in San Juan is real. Avoid driving during morning and evening rush hours if you can, especially on PR-18 and near the Condado area. We found that timing our outings for mid-morning or after dinner made the driving experience much more pleasant.
GPS Use
The 2017 Kia Sportage we rented didn’t come with built-in navigation, but syncing our phones via Bluetooth was seamless. We used Google Maps for every destination, and it handled Puerto Rico well, including routing us around traffic. Just make sure your data plan covers Puerto Rico or download offline maps before you land.
Safety
I felt safe driving in San Juan throughout our trip. Standard big-city awareness applies, be mindful of where you park, don’t leave valuables visible in the car, and stick to well-lit areas at night. Nothing alarming happened during our three days, and the highway driving especially felt no different from driving at home.

Parking in San Juan: What to Expect
Old San Juan Garages
There are a few public parking garages in Old San Juan, and I’d recommend using them rather than hunting for street parking. The Teodoro Moscoso Garage and Garage Dorado near the cruise ship piers are the most commonly used. Rates are reasonable, and you can walk to most Old San Juan attractions from there.
Hotel Parking
Many hotels in the Condado and Isla Verde areas offer parking, either complimentary or for a daily fee. Always confirm this before booking. Paying $25-$35/night for hotel parking is something you want to factor into your overall rental car budget.
Street Parking Reality
Street parking exists but is genuinely limited in Old San Juan, and navigating those narrow cobblestone streets while trying to find a spot is not a fun experience. For peace of mind, just use the garages.

Where Having a Rental Car Made Our Trip Better
Beaches Outside the Main Area
La Concha was convenient since it was near our hotel, but having a car meant we could have easily driven to Luquillo or Isla Verde Beach for a change of scenery. On our last day, we weren’t locked into whatever was closest.

Exploring Beyond San Juan
The Bacardi Distillery in Cataño was about a 20-minute drive from Old San Juan, and it was one of the highlights of the whole trip. I’d been on a distillery tour before in Puerto Plata, but Casa Bacardi was an actual guided tour, historical replicas of the original buildings, a video on Bacardi’s story, and rum tastings included in the ticket price. My sister loved it. You would never make this a priority on a rideshare-only trip, but with a car? Easy afternoon excursion.

Flexibility for Food Stops
Some of our best meals happened because we could just… pull over. A quick drive to a local Walgreens for snacks and drinks before exploring, lunch at Lupi’s Mexican Grill & Sports Cantina in Old San Juan, mofongo at La Cueva del Mar, the car made all of this easy.
And on the way back to the hotel one evening, I caught one of the most beautiful sunset photos on PR-26 that I would have probably missed otherwise.

The 2017 Kia Sportage made our sisters’ weekend in Puerto Rico genuinely easier and more fun. The AWD system handled Old San Juan’s cobblestone roads better than I expected. We barely used half a tank of gas over three full days of driving, as the Sportage gets 21 city/26 highway, and most of our driving was highway miles between the airport, hotel, and attractions. The interior was comfortable, there was enough space for luggage and everything we picked up along the way, and the Bluetooth connectivity meant we never felt lost.
The one thing I’d tell you: if we had been even a little more adventurous, we would have driven out to El Yunque National Rainforest. The car was ready for it, we just ran out of days. That alone is reason enough to rent a car in San Juan. Some trips deserve a “next time,” and ours definitely has one.

I love a car that can save on gas. I enjoyed Puerto Rico when I went a couple of years ago. We went to El Yunque and we went salsa dancing. I must go back as i only had a short amount of before i went on a cruise.
We have rented the Kia Sportage before and loved it! I love all of your photos in San Juan! I really have to figure out a way to visit there soon!
While we were able to get around town by Uber while in San Juan, I would’ve loved a car. This Kia seemed like he perfect car for the trip especially with the gas mileage.
The Kia Sportage is a cute midsize SUV. I love the color. Puerto Rico is beautiful.
I have not driven a Kia vehicle before but I went to San Juan for the New Year and had an epic time. There were definitely some moments in which I thought about renting a car but the parking in OSJ was terrible! lol I couldn’t help but notice that the drivers in San Juan were pretty patient! I hardly heard any horns honking. So different from the States.
On the highway, they’re pretty aggressive. I felt I was in NY.
I’ve had my eye on a KIA for a while now. I really like how nifty they are!
I need to visit Purrto Rico again. I wasn’t pregnant when I went and didn’t really get to do a lot of things I wanted to do.
Ooh yeah. There’s lots to do no passport required
I have never driven a Kia, but they look like cool cars to drive. I’ll have to keep this in mind the next time we have to rent a car. Your trip looked amazing, I have to put San Juan on my vacation list.
Yeah! We rented a car in Houston last year and we got the Kia Sportage 2016! Awesome to drive and the gas mileage was great too. I absolutely adore San Juan even though it’s been a while since l’ve been. You had an awesome time l know 🙂
Nice car and great pictures of San Juan. I have yet to visit there but I most definitely want to.
It’s beautiful. Next time I’ll definitely be venturing out more
